The Game Basics. Polo players use a mallet also known as a "stick". they are made of bamboo cane and the head is made of tipa wood. The head is beveled on one end to allow a full swing flush to the ground. They vary in lenght from 49 to 54 inches, and are hihgly flexible. The ball used today is made of plastic and is 3 1/4 inches in diameter and weighs approximately 3.5 ounces. originally, the ball was made of bamboo root, but was changed to plastic for consistency. All players use English saddles as opposed to western saddles. The Player's Jerseys are numbered from 1 to 4 . Number 1 and 2 are the forwards, number 3 is the quarterback and the number 4 is de defense, and is ussually called the back.

The Field A full size boarded polo field measures 300 yards by 160 yards. This vast size is necessary for eight polo horses to have room to gallop, stop and turn. Depending on the ability of the player, a struck ball can travel up to 150 yards.
